From 1981 onwards South Zone was brought under the control of Headquarters DIG, Central Zone and North Zone were each brought under the control of respective AIG of Prisons. In the year 2000, the post of AIG of Prisons were upgraded as DIG of Prisons . By 2012, the post of Principal, SICA was upgraded as DIG of Prisons (South Zone) & Director SICA and the control of South Zone was brought under this post. At present South Zone is headed by DIG of Prisons (South Zone) & Director SICA, Poojappura, Central Zone and North Zone are each headed by respective DIG of Prisons at Viyyur and Kozhikode respectively. Supervision and control of each jails in each zone are the responsibilities of concerned DIG of Prisons.
