The first high security prison in the State was opened at Viyyur on July 03, 2019. The Jail, constructed with state-of-the-art security facilities, has the capacity to house 600 prisoners. It has 192 cells. The three-storey building is situated in a nine-acre compound and has an administrative block. A body scanner has been installed at the prison as part of the security arrangements. A biometric fingerprint lock system is also in place for the entry and exit of staff and others. Cells have been built in such a manner that the inmates in the other cells will not see each other. CCTV cameras have been installed in all cells and premises.
